Thinking about our Country and our Students using Nathanson’s Compass of Shame: A Restorative Practice
What happens when we are repeatedly told we don’t belong? Donald Nathanson suggested we feel shame. He categorized human responses to shame as falling on a compass with the four cardinal directions of avoidance, withdrawal, anger towards self and anger towards others. In this session, we will think about what routinely happens with our students — and what has been happening across our country in response to brutal police treatment of people of color.
